THE 2018 GLOBAL ACTION WEEK FOR EDUCATION COMMEMORATIONS AT MT. MATEDZA HIGH SCHOOL IN MARANGE, MANICALAND: 18 MAY 2018 The Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) embraces the 2018 theme “Accountability for SDG 4 through Citizen Participation: Keep Your Promise”. SDG 4 is on “ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

2017 GLOBAL ACTION WEEK

The Global Action Week National Commemorations was held on the 20th of July 2017 at Chipindura High School in Bindura, Mashonaland Central Province. It was graced by the Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Honorable Emmerson D Mnangagwa (Guest of Honour), Minister of State for Provincial Affairs for Mashonaland Central Province, Hon. Advocate M. Dinha; Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Hon Dr. L. D. K. Dokora, Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Hon Prof P.V. Mavima; senior government officials civil society actors, teachers and school pupils. It was commemorated belatedly. ECOZI joins the rest of the world to commemorate the Global Action Week for Education. Global Action Week for Education is a critical moment for civil society campaigners across the education movement. It is a time when we come together to make public demands of our governments to prioritise the right to education and to ensure its delivery is transparent, adequately financed and reaches every citizen in our communities.
ECOZI calls for the government to adopt innovative education financing models that efficiently and effectively mobilizes and applies resources to critical sectors of education to ensure that no child is left behind. We say to all “STAND UP FOR EDUCATION:IT’S TIME TO DELIVER”.

2016 GLOBAL ACTION WEEK

Global Action Week is one of the major focal points for the education movement since the 2000 Dakar World Education Forum. Created and led by Global Campaign for Education, Global Action Week provides everyone for the right to education with an opportunity to highlight the Education for All agenda and advocate for the governments to promote access to quality inclusive education for all. Globally, 2016 GAWE was commemorated from 24-30 April; however Zimbabwe conducted belated commemorations considering that the global dates fell on a schools holiday. ECOZI, civil society organisations, Teacher Unions, children, Government of Zimbabwe and the corporate world joined hands in commemorating the Global Action Week for Education in Gwanda, the provincial capital of Matabeleland Province on 27 May 2016 at Gwanda Country Club. The GAWE 2016 was under the theme: “Fund the Future: Education Rights now”. The campaign highlighted the importance of increasing education financing to promote development of children to their full potential for the attainment of national and international development. It stressed the importance of education financing in attaining all other SDGs. The Guest of Honour for the 2016 GAWE commemoration was Honourable Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko who, however, failed to attend in person and sent a proxy.

2014 GLOBAL ACTION WEEK

Education Coalition of Zimbabwe (ECOZI) commemorates the Global Action Week every year. Last year’s Global Action Week was held in one of the provinces; Masvingo from the 1th to 7thJune 2014. It was graced by the Minister of Primary and Secondary education Honourable L.D.K.Dokora, Minister of State for provincial affairs, the mayor of Masvingo, senior government officials and civil society actors. It was commemorated belatedly. There was participation of schools for children with disability and among them were Ratidzo Special School (Zimcare Trust, School for the mentally challenged), Henry Murray (School for the deaf), Mutendi Primary & High School .There was wide publicity throughout the town. The theme being: Equal Right. Equal Opportunity: Education and Disability.

ECOZI, other civil society organisations working on education and the government joined hands in commemorating the Global Action Week in Gweru, Midlands Province on 19 June 2015. The event was under the theme: The Right to Education 2000-2030-Vote for Education. The commemorations were done at Chaplin High School. The event was graced by high profiled government dignitaries who included the Honourable VP Emerson Mnangagwa, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Dr L.D.K Dokora, Civil Society Organisations and the corporate world. The event created a platform for CSOs and children to advocate for access to quality inclusive education for all and urged stakeholders in the education sector to put concerted efforts towards attaining the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals.

CSOs advocated for the Government of Zimbabwe to make more efforts to promote access to quality inclusive education by abolishing fees and levies, make BEAM accessible to all the needy children (including ECD pupils), abandon harmful practices that take away children from school, infrastructural development that meets the learning needs of different learners, developing policies that promote second chance education, provide conducive working environment for the personnel and avoiding privatisation of education.
